About this product
Bambu Lab PLA Aero — Lightweight Foaming Filament
PLA Aero is Bambu Lab's foaming PLA. As the filament passes through a hot nozzle it expands and forms microscopic voids inside the extrusion, so finished parts weigh far less than the same model printed in standard PLA. Bambu designed it for light-weight and energy-saving prints — unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), aerodynamic models and gliders. If you build RC planes, foam-style wings, drone canopies, lightweight props or any part where every gram matters, this is the material to reach for. It prints at PLA-like temperatures and needs no hardened nozzle, so it suits confident beginners as well as experienced makers, schools running aeronautics projects and small businesses prototyping lightweight assemblies.
The clever part is that you control the density. Print at the low end of the temperature range and the material foams very little, giving you denser, stronger parts. Push toward the top of the range and foaming increases, dropping weight significantly. One spool therefore covers everything from a stiff motor mount to a feather-light wing section.
Key Features
Foams while printing Tunable density via temperature Ideal for RC & UAV builds No hardened nozzle needed 0.4 / 0.6 / 0.8 mm nozzles Annealable for extra stiffness Odourless, PLA-based Bambu Studio profiles included
Print Settings
- Nozzle temperature: 210–260 °C — lower for denser and stronger parts, higher for maximum foaming and minimum weight
- Bed temperature: 35–45 °C on a Cool Plate, High Temperature Plate or Textured PEI Plate
- Bed preparation: glue stick is required — the low bed temperature means adhesion relies on it
- Print speed: under 180 mm/s
- Cooling fan: on
- Retraction: 0.6–1.0 mm at 20–40 mm/s
- Chamber temperature: 25–45 °C | Max overhang: 55° | Max bridging: 30 mm
- Supports: use standard PLA support settings

Available Colours
⚪ White (14102) ⬜ Gray (14104)
Both colours share identical specifications and printing behaviour — choose your colour from the dropdown above. White takes paint and trim tape well for scale aircraft, while Gray hides surface texture on larger aerodynamic shells.
Practical Tips
Calibrate flow ratio at your chosen temperature. Because the filament expands in the melt, a profile tuned at 210 °C will over-extrude at 250 °C. Print a small test cube at your intended temperature, check the wall thickness, and adjust flow ratio before committing to a long wing print. Running a short temperature tower is the fastest way to find the weight-versus-strength balance for your model.
Keep it dry and use glue. Store the spool sealed with desiccant below 20% RH — Australian summer humidity will degrade foaming consistency. If prints turn stringy or the surface looks rough, dry the spool at 55 °C for 8 hours in a blast drying oven (never a microwave or kitchen oven). Because the bed runs at only 35–45 °C, a glue stick is not optional for first-layer adhesion. Finished parts can be annealed at 50–55 °C for 6–12 hours to add stiffness, but skip annealing on very thin, low-infill prints — they will deform.
