Unlock Perfect Prints: Your Ultimate Guide to Choosing 3D Filament
13 April 2025 · 5 min read · NE3D Printing
Ever watched your 3D printer meticulously layer molten plastic, transforming a digital file into a physical object? It’s captivating! But as any enthusiast involved in 3D printing Australia knows, the magic truly happens when you choose the right printing filament. Get it wrong, and you’re facing spaghetti monsters, warping, or parts that just don’t perform. Get it right, and the possibilities are endless.
Here at ne3dprinting, we’re not just suppliers; we’re passionate printers ourselves. We understand the unique challenges and triumphs of 3D printing Down Under. That’s why we want to share our expertise and help you navigate the most popular filament choices: PLA+, ABS, and PetG. Think of this as your expert guide to selecting the perfect material for your next masterpiece.
PLA+: The User-Friendly Champion
If you’re new to 3D printing or want reliable, easy-to-print results, PLA+ is likely your go-to 3d filament. Standard PLA (Polylactic Acid) is already popular due to its low printing temperature, minimal warping, and pleasant, slightly sweet smell (it’s derived from plant starches like corn).
So, what’s the ‘+’ in PLA+? It signifies an enhanced formulation. Manufacturers blend PLA with specific additives to improve its properties, often resulting in:
- Improved Toughness: Less brittle than standard PLA, making parts more durable.
- Better Layer Adhesion: Stronger bonds between layers for more robust prints.
- Smoother Finish: Often yields a slightly glossier, smoother surface.
Why Choose PLA+?
- Ease of Use: Forgiving print settings, doesn’t typically require a heated bed (though it helps!) or enclosure.
- Low Warping: Minimal shrinkage as it cools, reducing the dreaded print lifting off the bed.
- Wide Range of Colours: Available in a vast spectrum of vibrant colours.
- Good Detail: Excellent for models requiring fine details and sharp corners.
Best For: Prototypes, visual models, figurines, cosplay elements, decorative items, low-stress functional parts.
Considerations: Lower heat resistance compared to ABS or PetG (can deform in a hot car), can be brittle under high stress.
ABS: The Engineer’s Choice for Strength
When durability, toughness, and heat resistance are paramount, ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) steps up. This is the same type of plastic used in LEGO bricks, car dashboards, and many household appliance casings. It’s a staple printing filament for functional parts that need to withstand mechanical stress and higher temperatures.
Why Choose ABS?
- High Strength & Durability: Creates robust parts that can take a beating.
- Good Temperature Resistance: Can withstand higher temperatures (around 85-100°C) before softening.
- Post-Processing Options: Can be easily sanded, drilled, and famously smoothed using acetone vapour for a glossy, injection-moulded look.
Best For: Functional prototypes, mechanical parts (gears, brackets), enclosures for electronics, items needing impact resistance or higher heat tolerance.
Considerations: More challenging to print than PLA+. Requires a heated bed (around 90-110°C) to prevent warping, and an enclosure is highly recommended to maintain consistent temperature and contain fumes (ABS emits noticeable fumes during printing – ensure good ventilation!). Prone to warping and cracking if cooled too quickly.
PetG: The Versatile All-Rounder
Struggling to choose between the ease of PLA+ and the strength of ABS? Enter PetG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol). This 3d filament offers a fantastic balance, combining much of the strength and temperature resistance of ABS with printing characteristics closer to PLA. Think of it as the best-of-both-worlds option for many applications.
Why Choose PetG?
- Good Strength & Durability: Stronger and more impact-resistant than PLA+.
- Excellent Layer Adhesion: Creates very strong parts.
- Low Shrinkage/Warping: Much less prone to warping than ABS, often printable without an enclosure (though a heated bed is needed).
- Chemical Resistance: Resists water, acids, and alkalis well.
- Food Safe Potential: Many PetG filaments are inherently food-safe (always check manufacturer specifications and remember the printing process itself introduces variables).
Best For: Mechanical parts, functional prototypes, protective components, containers, parts needing chemical resistance, snap-fit enclosures.
Considerations: Can be prone to stringing (“wisps” of plastic between travel moves) if settings aren’t dialled in. May require slightly higher print temperatures than PLA+. Can be quite sticky when hot, potentially pulling chunks off certain bed surfaces (like BuildTak) if adhesion is too high – blue painter’s tape or glue stick often works well.
Choosing Your Champion: Which Filament When?
- Need it easy, fast, and detailed for visual models? -> PLA+
- Need maximum strength, heat resistance, and post-processing options? -> ABS (Be prepared for trickier printing!)
- Need a balance of strength, durability, and easier printing? -> PetG
Why Quality Matters: Sourcing Your Filament in Australia
Choosing the right type of filament is crucial, but so is the quality. Inconsistent diameter, moisture absorption, or poor winding can ruin prints, waste time, and cause frustration.
By sourcing your 3d filament from a trusted Australian supplier like [Your Website Name], you benefit from:
