About this product
Bambu Lab Hardened Steel Extruder Gear Assembly — A1 / A1 mini
Inside every Bambu Lab A1 and A1 mini extruder sits a pair of small gears — a driven gear and an active gear — that grip the filament and push it into the hotend. They do all the work, and they are the first thing to wear out. After a few kilos of carbon-fibre nylon, or after a stubborn clog has let the gears chew the same spot of filament for a while, you start seeing the symptoms: clicking from the toolhead, patchy under-extrusion, layers that thin out halfway up a part, or filament that simply refuses to load.
This is the genuine Bambu Lab replacement for that gear set (part FAE008-N), with gears machined from hardened steel for abrasion resistance. It is a serviceable sub-assembly, which is the point: when the gears wear, you replace a small part rather than the entire extruder unit. If you print abrasive or technical filaments regularly, it is also worth keeping one on the shelf as a spare.
Please note: this is the gear assembly only. It does not include the extruder motor, the filament cutter, the hotend or the nozzle — those are separate parts. If your extruder housing or cutter is damaged rather than just the gears, you want the complete Extruder Unit instead.
Key features
Hardened steel gears Driven + active gear pair Ball bearing included A1 & A1 mini Genuine Bambu Lab FAE008-N Abrasive-filament ready
- Abrasion resistance where it counts. Hardened steel holds its tooth profile against glass- and carbon-filled filaments far longer than softer gear materials, so grip stays consistent.
- Repair, don't replace. Bambu Lab sells this as a user-serviceable part precisely so that worn or clogged gears don't force a whole-extruder purchase.
- Bearing in the box. The A1-series kit includes the ball bearing that rides alongside the gears — a part that also wears and is easy to overlook.
- Genuine fitment. Dimensionally identical to the gears your printer left the factory with, so the extruder tension and filament path behave exactly as Bambu Lab intended.
- A sensible shelf spare. Schools, makerspaces and small production shops running A1 fleets can keep a couple on hand and turn an extruder fault into a short job rather than days of downtime.
Who it's for
- Abrasive-filament printers running PLA-CF, PETG-CF, PAHT-CF or any glass-filled material on an A1 or A1 mini.
- Anyone chasing under-extrusion after a bad clog — worn or filament-packed gears are a very common cause.
- Schools and makerspaces where printers are used hard by many hands and spares keep machines in service.
- Second-hand A1 buyers who want a known-good feed path before trusting the machine with a long print.
What's in the box
- 1 × Hardened Steel Extruder Gear Assembly (driven gear + active gear)
- 1 × Ball bearing
Not included: extruder motor, extruder housing, filament cutter, hotend or nozzle. Bambu Lab publishes a step-by-step gear replacement guide for the A1 series on the official Bambu Lab Wiki — follow it, and power the printer down before you start.
Material compatibility
The hardened steel gear pair is rated for the full A1-series filament range, including abrasive and technical materials: PLA, PETG, TPU, ABS, ASA, PVA and support materials, plus carbon- and glass-fibre reinforced grades such as PLA-CF, PETG-CF, PAHT-CF and PA6-GF. Remember that your nozzle also needs to be hardened for abrasives — upgrading the gears alone won't protect a stainless nozzle.
